Shrink of All Trades

With a severe shortage of psychiatrists, the last thing we need is for them to waste their time on tasks they have no business doing, often to the detriment of treatment.

Can you add to this partial list?

  • Psychotherapy: Non-physicians make excellent psychotherapists.
  • Prior authorizations: Let the payer review the patient record.
  • Advising patients about the risk of denial of life insurance if they send their medical record to the company: Physicians have no formal education in this area which has nothing to do with practice of medicine.
  • Authorization for service or comfort animals: Let the bureaucrats review the patient record.
  • Other accommodation requests: Let the bureaucrats review the patient record.
  • Assessment of safety to own or carry a firearm: Let the bureaucrats review the patient record or hire a forensic expert.
  • Determination of work related causality in workers compensation claims: Forensic examination.
  • Advocate for excuse from jury duty: Let the bureaucrats review the patient record.
  • FMLA forms:  Let the bureaucrats review the patient record.
  • Disability applications: Let the bureaucrats review the patient record.

Psychiatrists have been all too willing to sign any attestation, complete any form a patient or patient agent puts in front of them. Let psychiatrists restrict their professional activities to diagnosis and recommendations for treatment of mental disorders. Patients will get care -- better care.
