drug class: inhalant


This group of ubiquitous substances is so varied that they have little in common other than their volatility and route of administration (inhaled). Only a few are primarily produced as drugs while the majority have a variety of industrial and household uses. Few, if any, are controlled substances. They are found in glue, hair spray, paints, nail polish and other products. Many are flammable.

  • Cleaning fluids: carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethane, trichloroethylene
  • Fuels: butane, gasoline, isopropane, propane, tetraethyl lead
  • Gases: fluorinated hydrocarbons: Freon, bromochlorodifluoromethane, other fluorocarbons (refrigerants, fire extinguishers); nitrous oxide (N2O: anesthetic, whipped cream charger)
  • Nitrites (amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite)
  • Solvents: acetates, acetone, benzene, butylacetate, chloroform, ether, hexane, methanol, naphtha, methyl chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, toluene
