Usually used in the plural, synesthesias refers to the experience of sensation in a secondary sensory modality that is triggered by a stimulus in the primary modality. For example, seeing the color red might produce a smell of cinnamon. These are further named by the secondary modality as phonisms, photisms, olfactisms, gustatisms, etc.
