Jazz saxophonist Bird tells his wife Chan, referring to his stomach ulcers, "I gave them some codeine, and they wouldn't go away."
"... he got one of the camera girls to take a picture of me in the midst of my disorientation."
"Work that psychology on him."
Chan: "I just put one child in the grave."
Bird reaches for a bottle of iodine marked poison and apparently drinks it off camera. (0:04)

Psychiatrist Dr. Heath reads from a chart: "Patient admitted to psychiatric pavillion at request of wife following suicide attempt by ingestion of iodine... Patient has a past history of, quote, nervous breakdown, unquote, for which he was hospitalized in California for a period of eight months. According to the wife this attempt was related to depression over the recent death of their daughter..."
"I asked that... young woman if she would administer my paraldehyde, and she demurred." (0:12)

Chan tells Heath, "Can't afford to get drunk, the substitute is pain."
"He needs medical treatment, not psychological." (0:13)

Bird, restrained in his hospital bed, dreams of Dr. Caulfield in a morgue showing him track marks on the arm of a corpse. (0:14)

Bird tells his agent Bernie, "If I'm straight."
Young Doctor: "I've got to redo the restraints." (0:17)

Heath tells Chan, "I think you would benefit from a state asylum and from shock treatment."
"But I promise you, if it were my brother, I'd shock him." (0:18)

Newspaper headline: "CHARLIE PARKER ATTEMPTS SUICIDE BY DRINKING IODINE; Depressed by Daughter's Death"
Bird tells Chan, "A little detox, it did me good." (0:29)

Bird tells Chan, "What you mean is, I eat an awful lot for a junkie, don't I?" (0:33)

Chan tells Bird, "Well there's the suicide room."
Bird: "I didn't know why until somebody told me that I was strung out."
Chan: "I was born to drive men crazy." (0:37)

Bird tells Chan, apparently referring to Carolyn, "Stuff's not easy to find, for one thing."
Chan: "Hunt for drugs during the day..." (0:49)

Unidentified narrator as Bird purchases drugs: "Contributing factors to patient's nervous breakdown... A: Disorientation due to unfamiliar surroundings... C: Reduced availability of narcotics due to police crackdown." (0:52)

Bird tells his lover, "You know, Audrey, if we could really hear every sound in the world, we go crazy." (0:58)

Chan tells nightclub owner Sammy, referring to Bird: "He's clean. The dope in LA dried up so he had to kick. That nearly killed him, so he stayed drunk most of the time... hasn't had a drink, snorted or shot for six months. He's clean and ready to work." (1:05)

Narcotic agent Ralph tells Bird, "You're an alcoholic. You're a junkie..."
Bird: "I can give you... names, all junkies, one's you nailed, wouldn't be no more heroin in New York City. (1:09)

Bird tells another musician, "You saying Diz and Duke on one side and junkies on the other. So I kick. I can kick." (1:19)

Trumpet player Red fakes hematuria in order to obtain a prescription for narcotics from Dr. Stockton: "I was real stupid to leave my pain pills in New York..."
Stockton: "well, two days, a dozen Empirin with codeine ought to do it."
Red: "My doctor wrote for Dilaudid."
Stockton: "Dilaudid?"
Red prepares to inject the drug. Bird asks him, "If you want to play like Bird, you gotta shoot... like Bird?" He tells Bird, "I know a thousand guys who fix." (1:35)

Red tells Bird, "You're trying to kick."
"If I can kick, you can kick." (1:43)

Bird asks Red, "You know where I can give me some stuff?" (1:53)

Bird dictates a telegram to Chan: "Darling, the news of our daughter's death..." (2:05)

Syringe, spoon, white powder, Bird's track marks. (2:07)

Funeral parlor, cemetery, burial. (2:08)
