Stop wasting prescribers' time. Instead of requiring them to access their patient's database showing recent prescription of controlled substances (prescription monitoring program), push the data to them.
Prescribers do need to know what other drugs a patient may take before prescribing a new one. (Whether this will help the opioid crisis remains to be seen.) Some patients conceal that information; others just fail to remember. It wastes precious time for the prescriber to access a state database, which may not be current or accurate anyway, and may not show prescriptions in other states.
Electronic prescription services used by many, if not most, prescribers could easily push the relevant information to the prescriber while she writes the prescription.
