Surgical interruption of nerve fibers connecting the frontal or prefrontal areas of the cerebral cortex of the brain. Although such a procedure may have been first performed in 1892 in Switzerland by Gottlieb Burkhardt, Egas Moniz probably introduced the procedure to modern medicine, winning the Nobel Prize for his work.
