”Jimmy, your father had his dream...”
”You had dreams of your own... You couldn’t go on living out someone else’s dream.” (1:30)

Except for Dr. Brown's couch, the film portrays psychotherapy with little or no similarity to psychoanalysis at a time when that method dominated psychiatric training, raising the question of whether Piersall accurately recalled the treatment. Brown's recognition of family dynamics and involvement of Piersall's family, with no allusion to transference, seems to anticipate family psychotherapy.
